SPIRIT: Wide Field of View TIR Telescope
This is possible by mosaicking uncooled thermal infrared detectors and implementing SuperSharp’s sensor ground tracking technology.
Most available bolometer arrays are limited to 1280 pixels wide, severely limiting swath and/or spatial resolution. By mosaicking 4 bolometer arrays, SPIRIT produces a focal plane array capable of capturing images with a swath of 35km.
These approaches dramatically increase the
area observed by a high-resolution imager in orbit, greatly reducing revisit times for a given number of satellites in a constellation.
